Covid-19 cases are once again on an upward swing in India and across the world. India itself reported over 12,500 new coronavirus cases in one day, raising legitimate concern around the situation. With the festive season around the corner, the fear of further growth in cases is palpable. Amidst the global rise of Covid-19 cases, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus urged people not to lower their guard against the deadly virus.

“15,000 deaths in a week (globally) is completely unacceptable when we have all the tools to prevent infection and save lives,” he says in a video posted on his Twitter page.

As per varied reports, in the past one month, the global deaths related to Covid-19 have seen an increase of 35 percent. Since the start of Covid- 19 epidemic, over 59 crore cases have been reported across the globe. In the lead is the US with over 9.3 crore cases, followed by India with a count of around 4.4 crore cases.

Health organizations and experts across the world have been convincing citizens to get vaccinated to do their bit in protecting themselves. Dr. Ghebreyesus says, “None of us is helpless. Please get vaccinated if you are not and if you need a booster, get one.”

In the past two and half years, we have learnt a lot of things about Covid-19 and Ghebreyesus says that it is time that we use the tools we have now to “protect ourselves and others as well.”

“Learning to live with Covid-19 does not mean that we forget it exists. Instead, it means that we make use of vaccines and other tools,” he asserted.

The WHO has also taken this chance to address the unequal distribution of vaccines across the globe.

In India, efforts are being made to remind people to keep their masks on in public places and practice social distancing as far as possible.

Since vengeance travel is on in full swing nowadays, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in India has issued guidelines for airlines to take strict actions against passengers who are not following Covid-19 protocols.

The key to fighting this pandemic is that each and every one of us needs to do our part by getting vaccinated and wearing masks in public places.
