We often believe the myth that oily skin is more prone to skin problems such as acne or breakouts. But managing skin that is dry or rough is even more difficult. It may simply be the leading cause of wrinkles, flaky skin, damaged lips, and even acne. Some people’s dry skin may appear to be harmless, but if it isn’t properly cared for, it can result in a number of serious skin problems including dermatitis or eczema. The market may be flooded with products known for their ability to moisturize, nothing can be compared to the nourishing effects of face oils. Yes, face oils for dry skin can work wonders!

Is using face oil beneficial?

Our skin naturally makes oils and lipids which helps prevent water loss from our skin and keep it hydrated. But in the case of dry skin, production of natural oil decreases. That’s why using facial oils for dry skin have been shown to improve skin’s health. Being layered on as the next step after applying the moisturiser, a face oil helps lock in moisture to keep everything underneath the soft and hydrated skin.

Forbese Healths spoke with Dr Amit Bangia, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Asian Hospital, Faridabad, about the benefits of facial oils and which face oils are best to manage dry skin.

Dr Bangia says, “Essential fatty acids present in facial oils help in moisturizing the skin, providing essential nutrients and help in healing dry, chapped and cracked skin. Not only this, they also lock in hydration and provide glow.”

Here are 5 face oils for dry and rough skin:

1. Argan oil

Your struggles with dry skin may be put to an end with argan oil. It offers anti-sebum actions that can control the sebum production on your skin. This oil can promote a smoother, calmer complexion by treating a variety of skin conditions, including dry skin and acne. At least twice a day, apply it directly to your skin or use a face cream containing argan oil.

2. Coconut oil

We all have fond memories of watching our grandmothers use coconut oil on their skin. It has now been established that coconut oil helps both manage dry skin and slow down the ageing process. Coconut oil can improve the appearance of your skin due to its high vitamin E and K content, anti-fungal and antibacterial activities, and antibacterial characteristics.

3. Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is great when it comes to calming and soothing irritation and redness on the skin. Jojoba oil actually has a number of therapeutic benefits that may help with the treatment of skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Use it as a cleanser, moisturizer, or spot treatment to reap its advantages. Usually, it doesn’t need to be diluted and can be applied to any part of your body, including your face.

4. Olive oil

Olive oil can act as an additional skin barrier for dry, cracked skin, especially in the winter. It is a great skin moisturizer, especially when applied to wet skin when the pores are open. Olive oil also hydrates skin and kills bacteria because to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics.

5. Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil can be used to moisturize dry, dull skin, even out skin tone, and reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Because linoleic acid and vitamin E protect skin from environmental harm, restore its elasticity, and aid in moisture retention, this is the case. Additionally, the astringent in grapeseed oil helps to tone and tighten your skin, giving it a smoother, more radiant appearance.

Tips to keep in mind while using face oils:

  • Must not be used in acne prone skin as they can clog pores.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and use a sunscreen especially when using essential oils on the face because some of them make your skin slightly sensitive to sunlight.
  • If your skin is very dry and rough, you can use oil day and night.
  • Always cleanse your face before applying face oil.
  • Avoid using it with skin problems like rosacea, clogged pores, seborrhoea and allergic contact dermatitis.
